What Are The CBD Products Approved By FDA?

CBD Clinical Trials

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for the approval of drugs for treating specific diseases. Hence, drugs will become legal only if they get the approval of the FDA. FDA will approve a drug only if it passes clinical trials and prove that it is effective for a particular treatment. Therefore, before you use or market a product, it is important to make sure that it got the approval of the FDA so that you can ensure its credibility.

The CBD products also need approval of the FDA for using them in the healthcare industry. Even though there are a lot of CBD and other cannabis products available in the market, all of them are not approved by this agency. Therefore, we cannot be sure about their credibility, effect or problems. Hence, before using a product, make sure that it is approved by the FDA.

Has the FDA approved any CBD products?

A lot of people use different CBD products for treating diseases and also as a health supplement. But it is important for you to know that the FDA has not approved the use of all of these CBD products. However, it has approved the use of one cannabis-derived product known as Epidiolex (based on cannabidiol) and three other synthetic cannabis-related drug products including Marinol (dronabinol), Cesamet (nabilone) and Syndros (dronabinol). This agency has not approved any other cannabis products to date.

The products approved by the FDA will be only available with a prescription from a licensed medical practitioner.

The Use of FDA Approved Cannabis Products

Epidiolex, a FDA approved cannabis product, contains a purified form of cannabidiol (CBD) that is extracted from the cannabis plant. Even though CBD is derived from the cannabis plant, it does not cause the “high” effect. Epidiolex is mainly used for treating the seizures associated with Dravet syndrome or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in patients who are at least two years old. It means that CBD clinical trials have succeeded to prove the effectiveness of this medicine. Therefore, FDA has concluded that this specific drug is effective and safe for its intended use.

Marinol and Syndros, which are the other products approved by the FDA have also passed the CBD clinical trials. They are commonly used for curing nausea associated with chemotherapy which is a treatment used for cancer. They are also used for treating the anorexia that is associated with weight loss found in AIDS patients. Marinol and Syndros contain an active ingredient called dronabinol which is a form of THC that is considered as a psychoactive compound.

Another cannabis product approved by FDA includes Cesamet that contains an active ingredient known as nabilone, which is a chemical structure that is similar to THC. This ingredient is synthetically derived. Cesamet is also used for the treatment of nausea associated with chemotherapy.
